WHAT IS MODERN SLAVERY?
People forced to work without pay, under threat of violence and who cannot walk away. The core of modern slavery remains what it has always been, the violent control of one person by another. Slavery is illegal in every country, yet it still persists in every country. Today it can take the form of debt bondage, forced labour, hereditary slavery, child slavery (such as child soldiers), and early and forced marriage. It can be facilitated through human trafficking; that is, the transport or trade of people from one area to another into conditions of slavery.
GUERNSEY'S ANTI-SLAVERY MOVEMENT
To ensure Guernsey is a slave free island and to take an active part in the wider global anti-slavery movement.
It is estimated that there are 45.6 million slaves in the world today. Representing just 0.6% of the global population, this is the smallest ever proportion of the world population to be enslaved. Slavery is teetering on its own extinction. Stand with us and join us to push it over the precipice.
